Tulips

Tulip is a flower that belongs to the family of Liliaceae having more than 100 species. These flowers are native to southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia from Anatolia and Iran, east to northeast China and Japan. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan. Tulips are perennial bulbous plants with a small number of waxy textured, glaucous and strap shaped leaves. The tulip plant has large flowers with six petals. The fruit of this plant has numerous flat disc shaped seeds and is in the form of a dry capsule. Tulip plants grow to a height of about 10 to 70 centimetres.

Tulip growing tips

- To obtain best results it is very important to have good quality bulbs. Tulips tend to run out but you can have satisfying results for quite a few years by fertilizing the plantings each season and by setting bulbs every 2-3 years. The ideal time for planting tulip beds is between October and November.

- Before planting, the ground needs to be worked well to a depth of a foot. If your soil is heavy or quite sandy, be sure to work in generous amounts of compost, well-rotted manure, and some peat moss.

- The actual depth of planting depends a great deal on soil conditions. Generally four to five inches from the top of the bulb is the advised planting depth. In lighter soils it may be desirable to plant a couple of inches deeper.

- Deep planting makes it possible to grow annuals directing over the tulip without danger of injuring them. Plant the flattened base of the bulb down, with the tip pointing up.

- After planting, water thoroughly to settle the soil around and above the bulbs.

- In most areas tulip plantings do not need to be mulched, but, where winters are severe, mulch after the first frost. The mulch may be straw, grass clippings, leaves or pine boughs. Remove the cover early in the spring.
